UAE Visa Status Meaning: Every Result Word Explained
When you check a UAE visa or application, the result uses a few standard words. Under process means it is still being reviewed. Approved means it is ready for the next step. Valid means your residency is active now. Cancelled and expired mean the visa no longer works. Here is what each result actually means, and what to do next.
Every UAE visa status, explained
ICP and GDRFA return your result using one of a small set of words. Each one has a specific meaning, and mixing them up causes a lot of needless worry. Use this table to read your result correctly the first time.

If your own result used a word not covered here, treat it as informational rather than urgent. Government portals occasionally use slightly different labels for the same underlying status. Cross check with a fresh visa status check after a day or two if the wording is unclear.
File number vs UID: what is the difference?
Your result screen also shows two different numbers, and they are easy to confuse. Your visa file number changes every time you get a new visa. Your UID, short for Unified Identity Number, is permanent and never changes, no matter how many visas you hold over the years.
The file number follows a set pattern: an emirate code, the year, then a serial number. A file number starting 201 is Dubai. One starting 101 is Abu Dhabi, and 301 is Sharjah. The prefix is also how you know which portal to check your status on, GDRFA for 201, ICP for everything else.
Save your UID somewhere safe when you first arrive. Your file number will change at every renewal, but your UID stays the same for life and links all your UAE records together.
How to read your result correctly?
A status result is not the same thing as a guarantee. Under process can still turn into rejected. Approved is not the same as printed. Read every field on the result screen, not just the headline word, because the expiry date and the specific stage often matter more than the label itself.

What does “under process” mean on a UAE visa check?
It means your application has been submitted and is still being reviewed by ICP or GDRFA. It is not a rejection and needs no action from you. Most applications clear within a few weeks depending on the visa type, though complex cases or missing documents can extend the review.
Is “approved” the same as my visa being issued?
