Labour Ban Check UAE: How to Check Your Ban Status
To check for a labour ban, call MOHRE on 600 590 000 or check your work permit status in the MOHRE app, where a ban will show. The automatic six-month ban no longer exists under the current law. The main ban today is a one-year work-permit ban, applied only in specific cases such as leaving your job without serving your notice period.
- Check your work permit status in the MOHRE app.
- Or call MOHRE on 600 590 000 to confirm.
- If a ban shows, check whether you are exempt.
How to check your labour ban status?
A labour ban is recorded by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), so that is where you confirm it. There is no separate “ban check” screen, a ban shows up against your work permit, so checking your permit is the practical way to see one.
- Check your work permit status in the MOHRE app or on mohre.gov.ae; a ban appears there.
- Call the MOHRE hotline on 600 590 000, which operates in several languages, and give your work permit, Emirates ID, or passport details.
- Visit a Tasheel centre, which can look up your status for you.
If you are between jobs, it is worth also running an absconding case check, since a confirmed absconding case carries its own one-year ban.
Is there still a six-month labour ban?
No! And this is the biggest source of outdated advice online. The automatic six-month labour ban that used to apply when you changed jobs was removed under the current law, Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021. You can now move between employers far more freely than the old rules allowed, and most job changes carry no ban at all.
What remains is a one-year work-permit ban that applies only in specific situations, chiefly when an employee terminates their contract without serving the required notice period and does not work through it. In that case, the ban runs for one year from the date the person leaves the UAE. Providing fake certificates or false identity details is treated far more seriously and can lead to an extended or even permanent ban.
Types of labour ban and how long they last
“Ban” covers a few different things, and the duration depends on what triggered it. It also matters whether the ban is a labour ban or an immigration ban, because they are not the same.
| Ban type | Typical duration | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| One-year work-permit ban | 1 year from departure | Leaving without serving notice, or breaching contract terms |
| Permanent ban | Indefinite | Fake certificates, false identity, or a serious criminal offence |
| Conditional hold | Until cleared | An unresolved case, a debt, or an absconding flag |
The key distinction is this: a labour ban blocks the issue of a new work permit, but it does not stop you entering the UAE, you can still come in as a tourist. An immigration ban, handled by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), is the one that blocks entry entirely. A labour ban also lifts automatically once its period lapses, so in many cases there is nothing to “remove”.
Who is exempt, and how to avoid a ban?
Several groups are excluded from the one-year ban even where it would otherwise apply:
- Workers moving to a new permit with the same employer.
- People sponsored under a parent’s visa rather than an employer.
- Skilled professionals whose qualification level is in demand in the UAE.
The simplest way to avoid a ban in the first place is to resign properly: serve your full notice period, work through it unless released, and complete the cancellation correctly. If a ban has been applied and you believe it is unjustified, you can challenge it, see how to remove a labour ban in the UAE. The full set of job-change steps is in our UAE work and labour guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if I have a labour ban in the UAE?
Check your work permit status in the MOHRE app or on mohre.gov.ae, where a ban appears, or call the MOHRE hotline on 600 590 000 with your work permit, Emirates ID, or passport details. A Tasheel centre can also look it up. There is no separate ban-check page; the ban is shown against your work permit record.
Does the UAE still have a six-month labour ban?
No. The automatic six-month ban was removed under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, so most job changes now carry no ban. The remaining ban is a one-year work-permit ban that applies in specific cases, mainly leaving a job without serving the required notice period. Fraud, such as fake certificates, can lead to a longer or permanent ban.
Can I enter the UAE if I have a labour ban?
Yes. A labour ban only blocks the issue of a new work permit; it does not stop you entering the country, so you can still visit on a tourist visa. The ban that blocks entry is an immigration ban, which is handled by ICP and is separate from a labour ban. The two are recorded in different systems.
When does a labour ban start and end?
A one-year work-permit ban generally begins on the date you leave the UAE, not the date it is imposed, and it lifts automatically once the period lapses. Because it clears on its own, there is often nothing to remove, but if a ban was applied unfairly, you can contest it through MOHRE with supporting evidence.
