Emirates ID Cancellation: What Happens When You Leave
You do not cancel an Emirates ID on its own. The card is tied to your residence visa, so when the visa is cancelled the Emirates ID is cancelled automatically as part of the same process. Your sponsor submits the request through ICP, or GDRFA in Dubai, and the card is deactivated in the system once it is approved.
- Ask your sponsor to start the residence visa cancellation.
- Hand over the card if the authority asks for it.
- Stop using the card once it is deactivated.
The card is cancelled with the visa
This is the part that surprises people. There is no separate service for cancelling an Emirates ID, and you do not need to find one. The card exists because you hold a residence permit, so cancelling the permit cancels the card with it.
That means the question to ask is not how to cancel your Emirates ID, but who is cancelling your residence visa and when. If you are leaving the UAE for good, or moving to a new employer, the visa cancellation is the event that matters. The card simply follows it.
It also means you usually cannot do this yourself. Residence visas are cancelled by the sponsor, whether that is your employer or the family member who sponsors you, rather than by the person holding the card.
How the cancellation happens?
The route depends on the emirate, because Dubai runs its own residency authority while the rest of the country goes through the federal system.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Dubai | The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) |
| All other emirates | ICP, the federal identity and citizenship authority |
| Who submits it | Your sponsor, usually your employer or sponsoring family member |
| Where it is filed | Online through ICP, or at a registered typing office |
Your sponsor completes the cancellation form and files it. Once the request is approved, the residence permit ends and the linked Emirates ID card is cancelled at the same time. You can follow the residency side of this in our guide to UAE visa cancellation status.
You may be asked to hand the physical card over as part of the process. Do that if it is requested, rather than assuming you can keep it once you have left.
Fees and how long it takes
Cancellation is quick, and the fees sit with the residence permit rather than the ID card. ICP lists the service as taking around two days.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Application fee | AED 50 |
| Smart services fee | AED 100 |
| Processing time | About 2 days |
| Emirates ID cancellation | Included, with no separate fee |
Some situations carry extra charges, such as cancelling an exceptional residence, or a sponsor cancelling while dependants are still on their file. A typing office will also add its own handling charge. There is no fee for cancelling the Emirates ID itself, because it is not a standalone transaction.
After your Emirates ID is cancelled
Once approved, the card is deactivated in the system, typically within a day or two. From that moment it is no longer valid identification, even if the printed expiry date is still months away. Do not try to use it for banking, medical services or any government transaction after that point, because presenting a cancelled card can flag as a violation.
There is one situation worth planning for. If you leave the UAE and stay outside the country for more than six months, your residence visa lapses on its own. That is not the same as a clean cancellation, and leaving your status unresolved can complicate a future return or a new visa application. If you are going for good, it is far better to have the visa properly cancelled before you fly.
If you are cancelling in order to change jobs rather than to leave, you will go through a fresh application once your new employer sponsors you, which we cover in our guide to a new Emirates ID application. The wider set of ID tasks is in our Emirates ID guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I cancel my Emirates ID?
You do not cancel it separately. The Emirates ID is cancelled automatically when your residence visa is cancelled. Your sponsor files the visa cancellation through ICP, or GDRFA if you are in Dubai, and the linked card is cancelled as part of that same transaction.
Can I cancel my own residence visa?
Normally no. Residence visas are cancelled by the sponsor, which is usually your employer or the family member sponsoring you, rather than by the holder. Your sponsor submits the request online through ICP or at a registered typing office on your behalf.
Do I have to return my Emirates ID card?
You may be asked to hand the card over to the residency authority as part of the cancellation. Whether or not it is collected, the card is deactivated in the system once cancellation is approved, so it stops being valid identification from that point on.
What if I leave the UAE without cancelling?
Staying outside the UAE for more than six months causes the residence visa to lapse on its own, but that is not a clean cancellation. Leaving your residency status unresolved can create complications if you want to return or apply for a new visa later, so cancel properly before you leave.
