UAE Home Internet: Fibre or 5G, and What It Costs
If your building has fibre, take it: performance is more consistent and latency is lower. If it does not, or you want service without an installation visit, 5G home wireless is the answer, typically around AED 206 to AED 269 a month with unlimited data and a router included. du is usually AED 20 to AED 100 a month cheaper than e& at equivalent speeds.
- Ask the building whether fibre is already installed.
- If yes, compare fibre plans on speed per dirham.
- If no, or if you move often, choose 5G home wireless.
Fibre or 5G, and how to decide
The UAE has unusually good fibre coverage, so for many residents this decision is made by the building rather than by preference. Where fibre is available it is the better connection. Where it is not, 5G home wireless has become a genuine substitute rather than a compromise.
| Your situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Building already wired for fibre | Fibre, for consistency and lower latency |
| No fibre in the building | 5G home wireless |
| Short lease or you move often | 5G, no installation to arrange or leave behind |
| Heavy gaming or video calls | Fibre, latency matters more than headline speed |
| Need service today | 5G, the router works out of the box |
The installation point deserves weight. Fibre means arranging an engineer visit and, in some buildings, landlord permission. A 5G router is plugged in and working the same day, which suits new arrivals who need connectivity immediately.
Fibre packages and prices
Both operators sell fibre in tiers built around speed, usually bundling TV channels or a landline. Prices below are indicative bands rather than quotes.
| Package | Indicative price | Speed and extras |
|---|---|---|
| du entry tier | From around AED 160 a month | Around 500 Mbps, the cheapest entry point |
| e& eLife entry | From around AED 299 a month | Entry fibre, promotional pricing common |
| e& eLife Family | Around AED 359 a month | 100 Mbps, unlimited data, 150 plus TV channels |
| du Home Starter | Around AED 389 a month | 250 Mbps, includes a landline |
| Gigabit tiers | Around AED 429 a month | 1 Gbps with unlimited data |
| Top-end 10G | Around AED 2,699 a month | 8 to 10 Gbps on XGS-PON fibre |
Two things to notice. Speed does not track price neatly across the range, because packages bundle different extras: an AED 359 plan with 100 Mbps and 150 TV channels is not worse value than a faster plan without television if you actually watch it. Compare what you will use, not the megabits alone.
And watch promotional pricing carefully. Entry fibre plans are frequently advertised at a promotional rate that reverts to a materially higher standard price afterwards, so check the post-promotion figure before signing. Our e& vs du comparison covers how both operators use promotions.
5G home wireless packages
5G home internet delivers broadband over the mobile network to a router in your home, so there is no cable to install.
| Provider | Indicative price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| e& Home Wireless Advance | Around AED 206 a month on promotion | Unlimited data, optional 5G router at no extra charge |
| e& Home Wireless Premium | Around AED 269 a month on promotion | Unlimited data, higher tier |
| du Home Wireless | Around AED 229 a month plus VAT | Unlimited data, 5G router, 12-month contract |
| Virgin Mobile | Varies | 5G home internet on du’s network |
Unlimited data is standard across these packages, which removes the main worry people have about running a household on a mobile network. The router is generally included, sometimes free outright and sometimes bundled into the contract.
Read the contract term. du’s wireless package has been offered on a 12-month commitment, and e& prices quoted above have appeared as limited-time promotions lasting a few months before reverting. Both facts matter more than the headline monthly figure.
Fibre against 5G on performance
The gap between the two has narrowed considerably, but it has not closed, and the difference is not really about peak speed.
| Factor | Fibre | 5G home wireless |
|---|---|---|
| Typical speed | 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps, up to 10 Gbps at the top | Up to around 500 Mbps, sometimes near 1 Gbps in cities |
| Consistency | Steady, unaffected by network congestion outside | Varies with signal and local network load |
| Latency | Lower, better for gaming and calls | Higher |
| Installation | Engineer visit required | Plug in the router |
| Portability | Fixed to the property | Move it with you |
In a well-covered urban area, 5G can reach speeds close to fibre, so for streaming and general browsing you may notice no difference at all. Where fibre still wins is consistency and latency, which is why gamers and anyone on long video calls should prefer it when they have the choice.
5G performance also depends on the coverage where you live, which is not uniform. Our operator comparison notes that e& has the wider national 5G footprint while du performs strongly in urban centres, and that difference matters more for a fixed home router than for a phone you carry around.
Speed, contracts and what to check
Most households buy more speed than they use. These are realistic requirements.
| Household | Reasonable speed |
|---|---|
| One or two people, browsing and streaming | 100 Mbps is comfortable |
| Family with several devices streaming at once | 250 to 500 Mbps |
| Heavy downloads or working from home with large files | 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps |
| Almost anyone | 10 Gbps is far beyond normal need |
Before you commit, check four things: whether the building already has fibre, the price after any promotion ends, the contract length and its exit terms, and whether the router is included or rented. The last one is easy to miss and adds up over a long contract.
If you are moving in and need something immediately while you sort a longer-term connection, a 5G package or even a mobile data bundle can bridge the gap, as covered in our cheapest data plans guide. The wider market is explained in our UAE telecom guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is du or e& cheaper for home internet?
du is typically AED 20 to AED 100 a month cheaper at equivalent speeds, and has the lower entry point, starting from around AED 160 a month. e& counters with promotional pricing, so compare the post-promotion price rather than the advertised one.
Is 5G home internet good enough to replace fibre?
In well-covered urban areas, usually yes for streaming and browsing, with speeds up to around 500 Mbps and sometimes near 1 Gbps. Fibre remains better for consistency and latency, so choose it for gaming or long video calls if it is available.
How much is 5G home internet in the UAE?
Roughly AED 206 to AED 269 a month with e& on promotional pricing, and around AED 229 a month plus VAT with du on a 12-month contract. Unlimited data and a 5G router are generally included.
What internet speed do I actually need at home?
Around 100 Mbps suits one or two people browsing and streaming. A family with several devices streaming simultaneously is comfortable at 250 to 500 Mbps. Gigabit and above is useful only for heavy downloads or large work files.
